SOLD! 1929 Steinway 6’4″ Ebony Satin Model A3 Extremely Rare “Time Capsule” Instrument
This piano was stored in a crate for 70 years in the basement of a prominent hotel in San Francisco until 1999, and was then acquired by a collector where it sat covered in a darkened room until a client purchased it in 2013. This is perhaps the only piano of its kind in the world – a near all original vintage Steinway in perfect condition. The only things that are not original are the fallboard decal which has been updated, and new Heller bass strings, and action knuckles were replaced. Everything else is all original – action parts, and hammers which were made with Merino wool, which far outlast modern hammers due to their density.
The soundboard is perfect, and the original ivory keys are so white they look like plastic. More importantly, the sound of this piano is absolutely glorious, and easily one of the most beautiful sounding Steinways I’ve heard in over 30 years. The bass is virtually indistinguishable from a Steinway B and projects fully throughout all sections of the scale. The sustain seems to go on forever, the most desirable quality in a piano. It has been regularly maintained with tunings every 4-6 weeks and has been fully voiced & regulated to the highest standards.
This piano will find an ideal home with a discerning pianist who simply must have the very best – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
