Steinway Pianos
Steinway is the icon, the 800-pound gorilla in the piano world. The overwhelming majority of major concerts and recordings
use a Steinway concert grand (usually from the Hamburg factory.) It's fascinating to read The Piano Book's current description of new American-made Steinways; a large part of the secret of any piano's beauty is the quality of preparation and maintenance by the piano technician---and Larry Fine (author of The Piano Book) is saying that American Steinways many times need more tender loving care out of the box than their hand-built "Tier I" brethren.
With any vintage Steinway instrument, all bets are off. The condition of the instrument before restoration, and the quality and intention of the rebuild can and does vary wildly. The reason one web site or store can advertise a "completely rebuilt and refinished Steinway 'B', restored to perfection" for $35,000
delivered and set up---and insiders know that the real cost of a quality custom-restored vintage "B" to be double that, and worth every penny---is just exactly that: the difference between artisans and grade C or D commercial "hack artists" doing the restorative work.
